Welcome to Year 2

Hello, my name is Miss Pratt and I am the teacher in Year 2.

I have been a teacher for over ten years, mainly in Key Stage 1, but this has been my first year at St Francis. I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone and have been made to feel very welcome by the whole school community.

I have wanted to be a teacher ever since I was a little girl and remember playing schools with my dolls and younger siblings! As a child, I was always inspired by the work we did in school and had the opportunity to learn a wide range of skills, many of which I still enjoy today. I aim to offer that same experience to the children in my class and develop a life long love of learning. My favourite thing about teaching is when you see pupils really engaged in exploring something new and keen to find out more by asking lots of questions. Curiosity, perseverance and resilience are such important personal qualities which I aim to develop through thought provoking challenges. I also enjoy planning a range of learning opportunities include drama, active challenges and using the outdoor environment as much as possible. My favourite subjects are Maths and Music and I take every opportunity to sing with my class. In my spare time, I also love to read and bring this passion into school by sharing books with children to promote a love of reading.

Welcome to Our Wonderful Year 2 Class

A very warm welcome back to school!

We hope you had a wonderful holiday and are ready for a busy and exciting year ahead. A special welcome to new pupils, parents and staff to our school; we hope you will be very happy here.

I would like to say how pleased we all are to see the children again. This is a very special school and one where we all feel extremely privileged to work.

Tennis Workshop

Our class enjoyed their visitor from our local tennis centre and learnt lots of the skills of tennis.

Physical Activity & Sports’ Festival

Some of our Year 2 children visited John Charles Centre for Sport to try lots of different sports and activities.  We were very busy!

Fire & Rescue Crew Visit Year 2

Hunslet Fire & Rescue Team visited Year 2 to teach us all about fire safety and what to do if there is a fire in our house.  They let us explore the fire engine and we even had a squirt on the hose!

Road Safety

We welcomed the road safety team to our school.  We all went out onto the local roads and learnt how to stay safe whilst crossing.  Well done to everyone!

Geography in Year 2

This spring term we all learning everything about maps.  We have created ariel maps of the classroom and we drew what we saw.

Christmas

We had a very busy Advent!  We learnt so much about the birth of Jesus.  We performed a nativity with Year 1, for all the school and parents.  We also had a Christmas concert – it was much fun!

Skype with a French School

We do lots of French in Year 2!  We regulary Skype to practise our French speaking and listening to a real school in France.  They practise their English speaking and listening with us too!

Our Great Fire of London Workshop

We welcomed a forest school teacher to our Year 2 class to teach us all about the Great Fire of London.  In the morning, we created our own model London, including St. Paul’s Cathedral.  In the afternoon, we made London outside.  Our forest teacher set light to it all and we watched how it would have burned!  We learnt how it spread so quickly and the consequences it had for London.

History – The Great Fire of London

We have enjoyed our history topic of The Great Fire of London – we know so much now!  Ask us some questions anytime!

Our Class Novel – Pumpkin Soup

In English we have been using the story ‘Pumpkin Soup’ to help with our reading and writing skills – so we made our own pumpkin soup.  Delicious!

Judo PE Sessions in Year 2

We welcomed a Judo teacher into school, to lead out PE lessons.  We enjoyed lots of games and learnt some Judo moves!

Balance-Ability Biking in Year 2

Over our three day sessions, all children in Year 2 have learnt how to read a balance bike.  Some children even progressed to using a pedal bike.  It was a very rainy three days too!

RE Topic Assembly

Our topic assembly was about God’s chosen people. We explained, sang and acted to the rest of the school, parents and visitors the Bible story of Daniel and the Lions.

Design Technology in Year 2

Design Technology Lessons

In the first autumn term in design technology we researched, designed, made and evaluated pizzas. We had some very yummy lessons!
